Peanut Butter Chess Pie

Peanut Butter Chess Pie combines creamy peanut butter with a rich chocolate chess pie filling baked in a flaky pie crust for a classic Southern-inspired dessert that's smooth, fudgy, and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Peanut Butter
  • 4 tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • 1+1/2 cups Sugar
  • 3 tbsp Corn Starch
  • 2 large beaten Eggs
  • 4 tbsp melted Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 9 inch unbaked (store brought) Pie Crust
Optional
  • Whipped Cream

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie plate
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Rubber spatula
  • Wire cooling rack

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place the unbaked 9-inch pie crust into a pie plate if it is not already prepared.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and cornstarch until evenly combined.
  3. Add the beaten eggs, melted butter, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Whisk until the filling is smooth and fully blended.
  4. Spread the peanut butter evenly over the bottom of the unbaked pie crust, creating an even layer across the base.
  5. Carefully pour the chocolate filling over the peanut butter layer, taking care not to overfill the pie shell.
  6. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top has formed a crust and is mostly set. The center should still have a slight jiggle when gently shaken.
  7. Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely before slicing. Cooling allows the filling to finish setting for clean slices.
  8. Serve at room temperature with a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature eggs for a smoother filling.
  • Spread the peanut butter evenly over the crust so every slice has a consistent peanut butter layer.
  • The center should still jiggle slightly when removed from the oven, as it will continue setting while cooling.
  • Allow the pie to cool completely before slicing for the cleanest presentation.
  • Top each slice with whipped cream for an extra-rich finishing touch, if desired.

A Southern Classic with a Peanut Butter Twist

Peanut Butter Chess Pie combines the smooth, custard-like texture of a traditional Southern chess pie with a layer of creamy peanut butter and rich chocolate flavor. Baked in a flaky pie crust, this dessert develops a lightly crisp top while remaining soft and fudgy inside, creating an irresistible contrast in every slice.
Simple pantry ingredients come together to produce a dessert that's elegant enough for holidays while remaining easy enough to prepare for everyday gatherings.

Chocolate and Peanut Butter in Every Bite

Spreading peanut butter across the bottom of the pie crust creates a rich foundation beneath the chocolate filling. As the pie bakes, the two layers complement one another while remaining distinct, giving each slice balanced flavor and a smooth, creamy texture.
The combination delivers a familiar pairing that has remained a favorite in homemade desserts for generations.

Cooling Creates the Perfect Texture

Like most chess pies, this dessert continues setting after it leaves the oven. Allowing it to cool completely before slicing gives the filling time to firm while maintaining its creamy interior. The finished pie can be served on its own or topped with whipped cream for an extra-special presentation.
Leftovers store well in the refrigerator, making this an excellent make-ahead dessert for family meals and celebrations.
